Remember recess? Wasn’t it a fantastic break from listening and thinking and learning? Of course, the bad thing was all those teachers yelling “Don’t climb on that,” or “Slow down!” Well, the Renegade Playground Challenge is like Recess, Unsupervised! Go ahead and run fast, climb over that wall, crawl through that mud. If you hear any yelling, it’s just your fellow Renegades cheering you on!
The Renegade Playground Challenge is a 5k-ish run that takes place on an off-road course over rough and rugged terrain. This isn’t your ordinary 5k run down quiet, tree-lined streets. This one is actually fun, and involves things like obstacles, mud holes, water, trails, walls to climb, beer, mud, and music. Yes, we meant to say ‘mud’ twice! The world is your playground, baby!
The 5K run is part of a fun-filled, family-friendly festival atmosphere, where individual racers and teams come together to spend a day competing, swapping adventure race stories and raising money for local charities.
The bottom line: We want our Renegades to have fun at the Renegade layground Challenge. Sure, you can get to the front of the starting line and maybe even be the overall winner of your age group. But most people just want to have fun and get muddy with their friends. And if you want to dress like Elvis Presley or Cat Woman, go for it!
So how does it work?
When you register for any event on our calendar, just choose the start time of your choice. We let our Renegades onto the playground in small groups so you don’t have to wait in line for anything. So, if you pick 2:00 PM as your start time, make sure you arrive by at least 1:00 PM so you can pick up your registration packet and racing bib. Of course, you’re welcome to come as early as 8:00 AM on race day.
Wave times fill up fast; some faster than others.
If you plan on ‘guilting’ your friends into starting a team with you, and you want to run in the same wave time, have them sign up soon! Wave times will sell out, and once they do, nobody else can be added to it. It doesn’t matter if the rest of the team is in that wave, once it’s closed, it’s closed. So get those friends signed up today!
If you’re the person creating a team, congratulations! You are the Team Captain! That means you get to create your team’s name, and you can log in at any time to see who’s signed up to be on your team! So register today, create your team, and let all your friends know your team name and wave time, if you all want to run together. It’s not mandatory of course; your teammates can run in any wave that’s available.
What the heck will I be getting into on the course?
Loads of fun, and tons and tons of mud! Once the school bell rings, you’ll make your way along a well-marked course that is approximately 5k in length (that’s just over 3 miles for those of you not up on the new math). So run. Run fast. Soon, you’ll arrive at the first of several obstacles designed to test your physical and mental stamina. Your goal: Get over/through/under the obstacle and run to the next one. If you’re running with a team, you’re encouraged to help each other along the way.
Running alone? No worries: Your fellow Renegades will gladly give you a hand if you need one! If you can’t negotiate an obstacle, we understand. You’re more than welcome to go around or skip it, but if you do, you may be subject to scorn and ridicule from your friends and fellow Renegades. We’ve got water stations for you, and some fantastic volunteers all along the course who can get in touch with “HQ” if you are injured or unable to continue.
Who’s that guy with the camera?
You’re a celebrity! By participating in the Renegade Playground Challenge, you’re giving us the OK to take photos and videos throughout the day; and you just might be in some of them! We also have photographers taking pictures to give you the opportunity to purchase them after the event if you’d like. It’s up to you!
Is that the finish line?
You did it, baby! When you finish, you’ll be tired, sore and completely filthy. You may bleed (OK, maybe not). But you also might have just had the most fun of your life doing the sort of stuff your mother used to yell at you about. We won’t tell her if you won’t, but if she’s on Facebook, she’ll probably see your pictures!
Who’s crazy enough to run the Renegade Playground Challenge?
A lot more people than you think! We’ve had Renegades as young as 14 and as old as 72!
Are you crazy enough to join us? We sure hope so! Come on out on the playground!
